چکیده

The AINSE-supported component of this project aims to use stable isotopes (del 15N and del 13C) to characterise the trophic positions of key species in the contaminated Derwent Estuary, Tasmania. The overall objective of the larger project is to trace the bioaccumulation pathways of mercury from primary producers to the top marine predators (sharks and seabirds). A static model of mercury accumulation will be produced, thus providing essential information for public health advisors, wildlife managers and for the development of estuarine remediation guidelines.

Determination of metal and organometal trophic bioaccumulation in the benthic macrofauna of the Adour estuary coastal zone (SW France, Bay of Biscay).

A multidisciplinary approach has been adopted in order to investigate the bioaccumulation of metals and organometals in macrobenthic populations. A complete method coupling a sampling strategy and classification of benthic organisms with a performant analytical procedure for the analysis of both metals and organometals has been developed. A single sample preparation method using a TMAH extracti...

Mercury Bioaccumulation and Adverse Reproductive Effects in Snapping Turtles Inhabiting a Historically Contaminated River

Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant that has received much attention due to its ability to persist within the environment and biota. Currently, most ecotoxicology studies euthanize animals to quantify the concentrations of Hg bioaccumulation. The development of nondestructive sampling techniques is a critical step for sustainable spatial and temporal monitoring of Hg accumulation because it elim...

Pattern and pathways for mercury lifespan bioaccumulation in Carcinus maenas.

Carcinus maenas is an important and exploited natural resource in temperate estuaries, being consumed by local populations and also used as fish bait. Through bioaccumulation and bioamplification processes occurring in polluted estuarine ecosystems, this species may directly or indirectly represent a major pathway for Human contamination. No information is available on the overall lifespan bioa...

Mercury speciation, reactivity, and bioavailability in a highly contaminated estuary, Berry's Creek, New Jersey Meadowlands.

Speciation and reactivity of mercury were examined in Berry's Creek estuary downstream of a highly mercury-contaminated U.S. EPA Superfund site during the summers of 2002 and 2003. Surface water samples from Berry's Creek estuary, its confluence with the Hackensack River, and upstream of that confluence were analyzed for total (THg), particulate (PHgT), and dissolved (DHg) mercury, total and pa...

Changes in mercury bioaccumulation in an apex predator in response to removal of an introduced competitor.

We evaluated methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in native apex predators, lake trout Salvelinus namaycush before and after the large-scale removal of introduced predators, smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu in a 270 ha Adirondack lake. Previous studies show that removing competitors can result in increased growth and decreased mercury concentrations in remaining fish. Instead, we observed a ...
